FENCERLENS / THE FENCING FIELD GUIDE

A useful conversation after competition

Ask when to talk

Start with practical needs and ask whether the athlete wants to discuss the event now or later. A car ride does not have to become a technical review. Let the athlete describe the day in their own terms before introducing your observations.

Use open questions

Try “What worked once that you would like to do again?” or “Which moment would you show your coach?” Keep results separate from effort, decisions and learning. Avoid assigning motives from a brief view of a bout.

Agree who does what

The athlete can select a clip, the parent can help organise the file, and the coach can guide the technical interpretation. Keep the next step small enough to complete. Revisit it after practice rather than making the next competition the only measure of progress.
